BAM Gala 2021 honors three powerhouse Brooklynites who have shared their talent and vision with BAM and the borough over the years: world-renowned actor Sir Patrick Stewart; Shelby White and the Leon Levy Foundation; and choreographer and UBW Founder/Chief Visioning Partner Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. The festivities include music by Brooklyn-based Afrobeat band Antibalas, dancing, awards, the kickoff of the BAM Art Auction, and performances by UBW Co-Artistic Directors Chanon Judson and Samantha Speis.

UBW JOINS JUNEBUG PRODUCTIONS AND PISAB IN WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY
ANTIRACISM ARTS INITIATIVE (AAI)
|

An ambitious new interdisciplinary leadership training initiative supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation looks to the arts as a catalyst for transformative change on campus and in the local community.
|
|
For the AAI, Wesleyan University is partnering with Urban Bush Women (UBW), Junebug Productions, and the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (PISAB)—to offer a series of conversations, workshops, Undoing Racism training, and support for research.
|

Uncovering Jazz Elements in the Work of Contemporary Choreographers
An essay by Melanie George, part of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Interactive The elements of jazz are embedded in the fabric of American culture. This essay explores the jazz elements found in the work of contemporary dance artists of the African Diaspora including Dianne McIntyre and Lula Washington, Urban Bush Women, and Reggie Wilson. Jonathan D. Secor
UBW Project Producer, Haint Blu As an independent producer, Jonathan is delighted to once again be working with Urban Bush Women. He is also currently serving as a producer for a four-week festival, curated by Mikki Shepard, to be held this Summer on Little Island. Jonathan was Director of Public Programs for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and was the Producing Partner for Urban Bush Women for two years. Jonathan is responsible for producing UBW’s ensemble dance-theater work Haint Blu, identifying creative community partners and spaces, and general project management. Read full bio HERE. |

June 19 - 21 | Juneteenth Celebration
Produced by Electric Root in partnership with the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State Join the Juneteenth Celebration hosted by Michael Mwenso! The celebration will feature a variety of performances including an excerpt from UBW’s 2018 SLI Culminating Performance, reflections, and contributions from Black artists and Penn State faculty members. The production will stream for 48 hours, June 19th - 21st, 2021. More information to come. |
